Can HIFU be used for non-aesthetic medical purposes, such as the treatment of cancer or kidney stones?

High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a noninvasive therapeutic technique that uses ultrasound waves to heat and destroy target tissue in the body. While HIFU has been used primarily for aesthetic purposes, such as skin rejuvenation and the treatment of benign tumors, its use has also been explored in non-aesthetic medical applications, such as the treatment of cancer and kidney stones.

As for cancer, HIFU has been studied and used in different types of tumors, including prostate cancer, breast cancer, liver cancer and pancreatic cancer. HIFU can be used as a primary treatment option or as palliative therapy to relieve symptoms in advanced cases. During the procedure, ultrasound waves are focused on the tumor, generating heat to destroy cancer cells without damaging surrounding tissues. HIFU is considered a promising option in the field of oncology, but more research is still needed to determine its effectiveness compared to other conventional treatments.

For kidney stones, HIFU has proven to be a viable option in the noninvasive treatment of kidney stones. By applying high-intensity ultrasound waves to the affected area, stones can be fragmented into smaller particles that can be eliminated naturally through the urinary system. HIFU avoids the need for invasive surgical interventions, such as shock wave lithotripsy or endoscopic surgery, which can reduce the risks associated with these procedures and speed patient recovery.

Although HIFU shows great potential in the treatment of cancer and kidney stones, there are still some challenges and limitations. Treatment accuracy can be affected by the location and shape of the tumor or stone, as well as involuntary patient movements during the procedure. In addition, HIFU can generate side effects such as pain, swelling and thermal damage to surrounding tissues, although these effects are usually temporary and mild compared to the benefits of the treatment.
